India captain Shubman Gill faced a hostile reception from the English crowd after his dismissal on Day 1 of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford. The skipper walked in to bat during the second session after the fall of Yashasvi Jaiswal and joined Sai Sudharsan at the crease. Gill, looking to redeem himself after a poor outing in the previous Test at Lord’s, was eager to score big and steady the Indian innings. However, his stay at the crease turned out to be short-lived and disappointing.

Gill was dismissed uncharacteristically, suffering a rare lapse in judgment. Facing Ben Stokes from over the wicket, he opted to leave a delivery that swung in and struck him on the pads. The English fielders instantly appealed, and after a moment of hesitation, umpire Rod Tucker raised his finger. Gill, who had never previously been dismissed by Stokes in international cricket, had to walk back for just 12 runs off 23 deliveries, leaving the visitors in a tricky spot during a crucial phase of the match.

As Gill made his way back to the pavilion, the English crowd booed him, making their displeasure known. It marked another setback for the young captain, whose form has been under scrutiny since his Player of the Match effort in the second Test at Edgbaston. His dismissal, coupled with the cold reception, highlighted the mounting pressure on him to perform as both a batter and a leader. India will now be hoping their middle-order can stabilize the innings and set a solid foundation for the rest of the Test.

India ended Day 1 on 264/4 in Manchester Test

India wrapped up Day 1 of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford on a steady note, posting 264/4 in 83 overs after being invited to bat first. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (58) and KL Rahul (46) provided an excellent platform, before quick successive dismissals. Captain Shubman Gill (30) contributed, but it was Sai Sudharsan's composed 61 that really helped stabilise the innings. Rishabh Pant (37) was also able to move fluently until having to retire hurt, which leaves a big question mark over his availability for the rest of the match.

At Stumps Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur were both not out on 19, helping India steer through a difficult last passage of play. England's bowlers all evenly shared the hits, with Chris Woakes, Ben Stokes, Liam Dawson and Brydon Carse all having one. Woakes was the pick, with his accuracy and economy. With day two just around the corner, India will look to build on this platform into a first innings score, waiting on news from the pant injury.
