ENG vs IND 2025: Shubman Gill's 'Favourite Journalist' responds after India captain's brutal trolling
BBC’s Joe Wilson responds sportingly after Shubman Gill’s playful troll following India’s historic win at Edgbaston.

Shubman Gill was at his absolute best during the second Test between India and England at Edgbaston, which concluded on Sunday. The Indian skipper played two masterful knocks, scoring 269 and 161, to lead his side to a thumping 336-run win, their first-ever Test victory at the venue. After the historic win, a jubilant Gill took the opportunity to poke fun at a journalist who had reminded him before the match of India’s poor record at Edgbaston.
As he walked into the post-match press conference, Gill looked around the room, clearly searching for someone. “I can't see my favorite journalist. Where is he? I wanted to see him,” he said with a smile, drawing laughter from the media as he cheekily trolled the journalist who had brought up the unfavorable stat. Gill then reiterated his stance on ignoring past records, saying, “I even said before the Test match that I don't really believe in history and stats... I believe we are the best team to have come here to England.”
He added, “If we keep making the right decisions and keep fighting, I think it will be one of the series to remember.” Gill’s confident words were backed by action as India squared the series 1-1 with three Tests to go, shifting the pressure squarely onto the hosts.
BBC’s Joe Wilson takes it in good spirit
Now, BBC cricket correspondent Joe Wilson, the journalist in question, has responded to Gill’s light-hearted jab. Speaking on RevSportz, Wilson said, “What the captain said, very sensibly, was that if you look back to the 1960s, 1970s, even 1980s, there was a different feel to the Indian team when they travelled abroad… Now, they do have the expectation to win.”

Praising Gill’s composure and sense of humor, Wilson added, “We lost count of records that Shubman himself and India broke. How to get Shubman out, that would be the no. 1.” When asked if he’d make another such comment before the next Test, Wilson smiled and replied, “I would say anything to motivate him, maybe, who knows. I think he is a real gentleman. He answers every question with great dignity. We love to talk about statistics, don't we? It was fun.”
