England have brought back the batting all-rounder, Jamie Overton, to their squad for the fifth Test against India at the Kennington Oval in South London. Overton, who played for Surrey in the County Championship last week, is the only change from the Manchester clash, which ended in a draw thanks to India’s superb character with the bat in the fourth innings.

Across two innings, the home side spent nearly three days in the field as their captain, Ben Stokes, admitted the physical toll on their body and the importance of fresh legs for the final encounter. They have kept the same attack mostly, with Jofra Archer replacing Josh Tongue after two games, while Liam Dawson replaced the injured Shoaib Bashir.

‘If you look at how long we've been out in the field and the overs that we bowled as a bowling unit, everyone is going to be pretty sore and pretty tired going into the last game of the series. There'll be an assessment of everyone, and hopefully we can use these next two or three days' rest period wisely and then have to make a decision. The Durham all-rounder expressed in the press conference.

England’s pacers have a long series. Chris Waoakes and Brydon Carse, who played four successive games in six weeks, looked dead on their feet by the end of the Manchester mission. The former has bowled 167 overs in the series, while Brydon Carse and Stokes have gone through 155 and 140 overs, respectively. The latter was struggling with his hamstring and shoulder in Manchester.

Gus Atkinson is expected to replace Woakes at his home ground, having proved his fitness during Surrey’s 2nd XI last week. Overton could also come into contention for playing his first Test since his debut in 2022 against New Zealand. The question will remain on Archer, as they look after his health with the Ashes 2025/26 awaiting in the winter.
