Former India batter Hanuma Vihari is set to represent a new state in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season. The 31-year-old has formally requested a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Andhra Pradesh, the side he has served with distinction for several years. Known as one of Andhra’s most dependable players, Vihari has made crucial contributions to their cricketing journey, both with the bat and his strong presence on the field. His decision to move marks a big shift in his domestic cricket career.
India’s Sydney Test hero from the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy is reportedly close to joining Tripura in a leadership capacity for the next season. Recognized for his resilience and composure in challenging situations, Vihari could bring stability and experience to the team. A senior official from the Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) confirmed discussions are underway and stated that they are close to finalizing his signing. Tripura will be competing in the Elite division this year, where Vihari’s guidance is expected to prove invaluable.
“We have recommended to the association a few names to sign as professionals. I cannot disclose the names but I know we are signing Vihari”, said an official from the Tripura Cricket Association.
Hanuma Vihari has been stalwart in domestic cricket
Hanuma Vihari has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket, having played 84 matches since his debut in 2011/12. Of these, 44 came for Andhra Pradesh, where he scored 3013 runs at an average of 44.97, including four centuries and 20 fifties. He even held a leadership role before being controversially removed in 2024. Notably, he once batted with a fractured left wrist in a Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Madhya Pradesh, earning respect from teammates and opponents alike for his courage and determination.
Before his Andhra stint, Vihari represented Hyderabad in 40 matches, where he piled up 3155 runs at an average of 57.38 with 10 centuries and 12 half-centuries, guiding the team to several wins. His most iconic knock for India came during the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney, where he fought alongside Ravichandran Ashwin to save the Test despite a hamstring tear. Facing 161 balls for just 23 runs, Vihari’s resilience and leadership qualities stood out. Tripura hopes to benefit from this grit and experience as he looks to elevate their cricketing stature.
