Former NZ coach tragically passes away aged 77

On May 30, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed the passing away of former Canterbury bowler and New Zealand coach, David Trist. At age 77, Trist took his last breath in Christchurch. However, the true circumstances of his death remain unclear as of now. Trist operated as a pacer for Canterbury and was an accomplished first-class cricketer for New Zealand in those early days. Subsequently, when his playing days were over, Trist continued his association with the game by shifting his focus to coaching.
Over his career, Trist engaged in temporary coaching stints with Canterbury, South Africa, Hong Kong, and the Netherlands before assuming the coaching position for New Zealand cricket in 1999 by replacing Steve Rixon. The former Blackcaps worked behind the scenes and played a pivotal role in helping New Zealand lift their first silverware in early 2000. Under his mentorship, New Zealand triumphed and emerged victorious in the Champions Trophy 2000 edition, which in those days was called the ICC Knockout.

NZC issues statement on deceased coach
New Zealand Cricket recently published a statement on social media confirming the death of the former Blackcaps coach on Friday. The national board expresses sadness and solidarity for his family and loved ones amidst this difficult situation.
"NZC is deeply saddened to confirm the passing of former Blackcaps coach David Trist, who died in Christchurch yesterday, aged 77...NZC extends its heartfelt condolences to David's family and friends."
New Zealand's successful campaign in the ICC Knockout (2002) has been etched as one of the most memorable moments of his coaching career. The team fought through all odds, beating Zimbabwe and Pakistan before outclassing India in the final from perhaps a very unlikely situation. Trist recalled how India went from 'We've won this' to 'Oh shit!' courtesy of a fighting knock from Chris Cairns who slammed an impressive 102* in 113 to power the Black Caps over the line.
