In preparation for back-to-back World Cups next year and in 2023, the Indian cricket team will be eager to end their ICC title drought and lay their hands on both tournaments. After winning the 2013 Champions Trophy, India won their first ICC title in eight years. Although the Men in Blue have come close several times, an ICC trophy has always eluded them.

Two months ago in the UAE, the team suffered a major blow when they lost in the pre-quarterfinal stage of the T20 World Cup, which makes the two upcoming World Cups even more crucial. ‘The 2007 and 2011 teams had that thing,’ Gavaskar stated. A crucial area that can boost India’s chances of winning the next two World Cups have been highlighted by Sunil Gavaskar, who led India to its first-ever World Cup triumph in 1983. Gavaskar argues that if Team India is to return to world prominence, this one important aspect needs to be resolved if they are to reach the pinnacle of their game once again.

Considering the current Indian team, there aren’t many options for all-rounders. Shardul Thakur is on his way to the NCA while Hardik Pandya is undergoing rehabilitation. Despite his success in the IPL, Venkatesh Iyer is yet to be tested at the highest level. From the above, it is clear that India requires more depth in the all-rounder’s department with several ICC events scheduled.
