The Indian cricket team is set to enter a new era of the shortest format, in which a number of youngsters are likely to be given the long rope, following yet another T20 World Cup disappointment. Even though numerous reports have suggested that the Indian team will likely undergo a number of changes in the T20Is, legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar has urged against “knee-jerk” reactions despite admitting that some difficult decisions must be made.

KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma, for example, had a terrible time in Australia, barely scoring runs when the team needed them. The team’s scoring leaders were Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav, though the former struggled from the start.

As part of a possible major overhaul, it has been suggested that the names of several children be changed. In an interview with India Today, Gavaskar stated that although the selection committee is anticipated to make some difficult decisions, no major changes would be discussed based on a single defeat.

“Let’s not talk about wholesale changes just because we have lost one match. We are very famous for our knee-jerk reactions and having a go at our team. I don’t think that is the right way. Yes, I think that hard calls need to be taken and hopefully the selection committee would take them,”

Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar also acknowledged that one of India’s primary concerns has been a lack of runs in power plays. Gavaksar anticipates that the selectors will put their plans for change into action in the new year.

“I think the lack of winning the power plays. Whenever we are beaten in the power plays, we struggle to win. Yes, I think that will engage the selection committee’s mind. If any change is going to happen, it will start after New Year once the domestic Indian season begins,”

he further said.

The likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Dinesh Karthik, etc. are likely to be eased out of the T20 team, making way for some fresh faces. But that might not be all.
