Just hours before the start of the Test series against England, Team India's young captain, Shubman Gill, has shared his thoughts. Gill, who is leading India in Test cricket for the first time, will face a tough challenge against England. He said that he and his team are not under any pressure. Gill also said that he wants to become the best batter in this Test series. At the same time, he made it clear that he is ready to sacrifice his own batting if it helps the team win the match.

The first match of the 5-Test series will be played at Headingley Stadium in Leeds from Friday, 20 June. A day before the match, on Thursday, 19 June, captain Shubman Gill attended a press conference. This was his first press conference before any series as a Test captain. Earlier, before leaving for England, he had spoken to the media in Mumbai along with head coach Gautam Gambhir, but this was the first time he addressed the media alone just before the series.

During the press conference, Gill spoke about some important points.

Shubman Gill said, “You cannot win a Test match without taking 20 wickets. So if we have to go with pure bowlers, we have no problem.” This clearly shows that he is ready to sacrifice batting depth if needed, and may choose a regular bowler over a batting all-rounder.

Talking about the importance of the series, Gill said, “Winning a Test series in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) is much bigger than winning the IPL. IPL comes every year and we get a chance every year, but winning a Test series is above that.”

On the number 3 position, Gill said, “We will see the pitch once again and then decide the number 3. After Virat bhai’s retirement, GG (Gautam Gambhir) and I decided that I will play at number 4.”

Gill also said that he wants to prove himself as the best batsman in this series. He said, “When I come out to bat, I want to play just as a batsman. I don’t want to think about captaincy because that can create pressure. I want to become the best batsman in this series.”

On the team’s experience, he said, “We will not look at old results. Many people are saying we are inexperienced, but that also means we are not carrying any burden or pressure from past results.”
