ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024: India among top alternate hosts

Bangladesh has the hosting rights for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. However, the present unrest situation in Bangladesh is forcing the International Cricket Council (ICC) to think about alternate venues. India is a strong contender among the alternate venues for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is preparing to host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, which has been scheduled between 3rd October and 20th October 2024.

However, there is a major concern about Bangladesh hosting the upcoming ICC event due to the present unrest situation in the country. Bangladesh is going through riots, violence, curfews, an internet shutdown, etc.

Last Monday (5th August), Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post and fled the country.

The ICC is monitoring the present unrest situation in Bangladesh. Although there is no official news, the ICC is reportedly ready for any bold steps to organise the tournament risk-free.

A spokesperson from the ICC said, according to Circbuzz, "The ICC is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), their security agencies and our own independent security consultants. Our priority is the safety and well-being of all participants."

The ICC already announced the complete schedule for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

Ten teams, including the hosts Bangladesh, will compete in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. The ICC officially announced the complete schedule for the upcoming women’s T20 World Cup in early May.

According to the official fixtures, Sylhet International Cricket Stadium (Sylhet) and Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (Dhaka) will host the complete tournament, where 23 matches will be played. Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium will host one semifinal and the final, while Sylhet will host another semifinal.

Also, two of the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan Grounds in Dhaka will host ten warm-up games just before the beginning of the tournament.

However, if Bangladesh's situation doesn’t improve, the ICC will need to take bold steps to shift the upcoming women’s T20 World Cup to another country.

India is a strong alternate contender

India is one of the strongest contenders for the alternate venue for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Interestingly, India will host the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025.

Apart from India, the ICC has some other top options for hosting the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. The United Arab Emirates or Sri Lanka are the other top choices for hosting the next women’s T20 World Cup.
