Shubman Gill has returned as the ODI captain while Shreyas Iyer waits for his fitness clearance as India announced their squad for the upcoming Home three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11. Iyer has been named the vice-captain of the squad, as the selectors rested Hardik Pandya.

Gill had missed the South Africa ODI series because of a neck spasm that he suffered during the Kolkata Test against the same opposition, while Iyer is making his return since the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. Gill returned to the action during the T20I against the Proteas, while Iyer had not played any competitive cricket since October 2025.

In Bumrah’s absence, Mohammed Siraj has also returned to the ODIA side as he represented India during the tour of Australia and has been a regular member for Hyderabad in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) and Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT). Apart from these changes, the number remains nearly the same as the last series at home.

KL Rahul is expected to be the first choice wicket keeper for India in the series, with Rishabh Pant perhaps being added as the spare option. Quite surprisingly, despite a century against the Proteas, Ruturaj Gaikwad has lost his place in the middle order of the Indian side as he was ignored in the selection process.

The seamers of the squad include Harshit Rana, Prasad Krishna Arjdeep Singh, and Mohammad Siraj, with Washington Sundar, Rabindra Jadeja, and Nitish Kumar Reddy being the all-rounders, while Kuldeep Yadav is the only wrist spinner of the side. Both Gill and I are expected to play a Vijay Hazare Trophy match each on January 6, before the India squad gets together.

The ODI series begins on January 11 in Vadodara before the teams move to Rajkot for the second ODI three days later. The series ends with the 3rd ODI being scheduled on January 18 in Indore before the focus moves to the T20Is.
