India set for coaching shake-up after historic back-to-back T20I series losses — Know details
India are staring at a coaching overhaul after historic back-to-back T20I series defeats — first-ever losses to Ireland and England under new captain Shreyas Iyer. Here's what triggered the BCCI review.

The Indian cricket team is set to undergo a coaching reset as one of the prominent members of the support staff is expected to leave, after suffering two successive T20I series defeats against Ireland and England. It hasn’t been a great start for the new leader, Shreyas Iyer, who has lost five of his six games in the shortest format of the as he replaced the T20 World Cup-winning captain, Suryakumar Yadav.
There is no certainty if the possible exit of the player will mostly be due to the coaching staff’s displeasure to continue in the current role or whether he has been moving on to take up a new coaching position or both.
BCCI to review Gautam Gambhir's coaching staff after back-to-back series defeats
The Gautam Gambhir-led coaching staff took charge in July 2024, beginning with the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka. Their bowling coach, Morne Morkel, joined the coaching unit a little later, ahead of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh at home, while the rest of the support staff began their tenure with Gambhir.
It has been revealed that the support staff signed a 2+1 contract with the BCCI. Even though the cricket board and the coaches have the option of mutually extending their contract by one year, it has been reported that one coach could have discussions with an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise and is likely to join their set-up.
It seems like the cracks among the coaching staff got deep once the Shubman Gill-led side lost to South Africa by a 2-0 margin. Many questioned the requirement to give break Gambhir and his support staff during the Zimbabwe series, given they were already on a break during the IPL.
The next few weeks could turn out to be really interesting in Indian cricket as the set-up could look different ahead of their two-match Test series in Sri Lanka, starting on August 15. Gambhir selected Ryan ten Doeschate and Morkel in the set-up.
T Dilip retained his position as the fielding coach. Sitanshu Kotak was added as the batting coach after Abhishek Nayar was relieved of his duties after India won the Champions Trophy 2025.
How India lost historic T20I series to Ireland and England under Shreyas Iyer
India, just after the IPL 2026, lost a historic two-match T20I series against Ireland by 2-0 margin in Belfast. In both games, the home side blew away the three-time T20 World Cup champions by 34 runs and one run, respectively.
In England, the opening T20I of the series ended in a no-result at the Chester-Le-Street in Durham before the tourists lost the next three T20Is by four wickets, 125 runs, and nine wickets, respectively.
India’s next and final game of the T20I series will be on July 11 at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, where a win for the Harry Brook-led side would take them to the top spot in the ICC T20I rankings.
