India to ignore Rohit Sharma for Australia ODIs? Asia Cup 2025 star in contention for selection
Will India look to drop or ignore their ODI captain and opening batter, Rohit Sharma, from the away Australia Series? The reports have revealed that the star Asia Cup 2025 player is in contention to get selected for the Australia series.

Soon after the end of the two-match Test series against the West Indies at home, the focus for the Indian team will move to the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia down under. Rohit Sharma, the captain of the 50-over format, is likely to return for the series after a long time. However, the national selectors are keeping different options.
It has been reported that Abhishek Sharma, the left-handed opening batter of the Asia Cup 2025, could well earn a ODI call-up for the Australia series. The destructive southpaw impressed the fans and selectors in the shortest format and could get rewarded with an ODI call.
Abhishek, who has smashed 173 runs in four innings at an average of nearly 45 with a strike rate of 208.43 during the Asia Cup 2025, has clubbed 2014 runs in 60 innings of List A cricket at an average of 35.33 and a strike rate of 99.21, thanks to eight half-centuries and four centuries at the best score of 170 runs.
Abhishek Sharma in contention to get selected for India in Australia ODI series
It has been revealed that during the Super 4 clash against Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, the 105-run opening stand between Abhishek and Shubman Gill proved the skills of the southpaw batter, of how he could take vital decisions even in intense situations, and excel in the game as he was unfazed by the opposition and took the challenge.
Shubman will anyway be the opener of the ODI side. And if Rohit gets available, he would not only open but also lead the team. In that case, Abhishek Sharma would have been warming the benches. But what if Rohit gets dropped or ignored for the 50-over clashes? The other question is about Yashasvi Jaiswal, who debuted against England in Nagpur.
India has already started their roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. They would reveal the squad for the Test series against West Indies, but they have also started discussions around the ODI set-up and future games before the World Cup.
