It will be an important series, which will also be a part of the 2025-2027 ICC World Test Championship. It will be the first time in Border-Gavaskar Trophy history that India will host a five-match Test series.

Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium (Jamtha, Nagpur) will host the five-match India vs Australia Test series opener from January 21, while MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk, Chennai) will host the second Test, starting on January 29.

Barsapara Cricket Stadium (Guwahati) and JSCA International Stadium Complex (Ranchi) will host the third (starting on February 11) and fourth Tests (starting on February 19), respectively, in mid-February. Who currently holds Border-Gavaskar Trophy?

Australia currently hold the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which they won in the 2024-25 season at home after beating the visitors India by a 3-1 margin in the five-match Test series. Before that series, India held the trophy for four successive editions, which they won successfully.

Meanwhile, Australia last won the away Test series against the hosts India in the 2004-05 season, when the visitors won that four-match Test series by 2-1. Since then, India hosted five Test series against Australia, and the hosts won all those series, while losing only two Tests and winning 12 Tests out of 18 Tests played.

Why is upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy so important for India?

The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be very important for both teams, as they will fight to qualify for the Final of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle. As India already suffered a home Test series against South Africa, India are unlikely to afford another home Test series defeat, especially against Australia. Currently, the two-time WTC runners-up are in sixth position in the points table.

On the other hand, one-time WTC champions and the last two-time finalists Australia are currently leading the points table with only one defeat and seven wins out of eight games. However, the Baggy Greens still have to put in powerful performances in the upcoming tour to ensure no late hiccups in the ongoing WTC cycle.

Fans react to new Border-Gavaskar Trophy schedule

While some fans are excited for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy with extra caution due to the importance of the series, some will miss their legendary players in the series, especially the former captain Virat Kohli. In the meantime, some fans have also questioned the venue choices for the big series.
