Indian vice captain reveals Akash Deep's struggles amid sister's battle with cancer
Rishabh Pant revealed Akash Deep dedicated his ten-wicket haul against England to his sister battling cancer, highlighting the emotional strength behind his standout performance.

Indian cricket team vice-captain Rishabh Pant opened up about the emotional context behind the heroic performance of Akash Deep in the second Test against England. Pant disclosed that he came to know about Akash Deep's sister fighting cancer during the season of IPL 2025, when both players were teammates of the Lucknow Super Giants. While Akash Deep did not speak publicly about it at the time, Pant noted that they had shared a few quiet conversations regarding the matter.
"I knew since the IPL. I had some conversations with him. But some things are such that the more you keep it personal, the better that way,” Pant said during a pre-match press conference. He heaped praise on Akash Deep's grit, particularly in light of his sister's illness, and was impressed with the way the young fast bowler was able to remain focused and deliver under pressure.
Akash Deep was India's hero of the second Test, with four wickets in the first innings and six in the second as he led his team to a historic win. He dedicated the ten-wicket haul to his sister, who is recovering from cancer, saying it was a deeply emotional moment for him and his family.
"Every time I had the ball in my hand, her thoughts crossed my mind."
In a heartfelt post-match interview with Cheteshwar Pujara on Jio Hotstar, Akash Deep revealed, “I have not spoken about this with anyone, but two months back, my sister was diagnosed with cancer. She will be very happy with my performance, and this will bring some smiles back.” The fast bowler held back tears as he spoke about the emotional toll and how his sister's fight gave him strength on the field.
“Every time I picked up the ball, her thoughts and picture crossed my mind. This performance is dedicated to her. I want to tell her, "Sis, we are all with you," he added. Akash also explained the technical aspects behind his key dismissals, particularly his strategy against Joe Root and Harry Brook, emphasizing the discipline in sticking to hard lengths and seam movement that paid off handsomely.
