The West Indies started the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 with many concerns, including Zaida James’ on-field injury and Stafanie Taylor’s fitness issue.

The 2016 WT20 WC winners West Indies Women started their campaign in the 2024 edition with a havoc 10-wicket defeat against South Africa Women in the Group B encounter at Dubai. While the Caribbean side scored 118/6 in 20 overs, the Proteas side chased the target successfully in 17.5 overs without losing any wickets.

Zaida James got a big blow on her face

The Caribbean all-rounder Zaida James suffered a big blow at the beginning of the second innings. It was the first ball of the second over of the second innings when the South African captain Laura Wolvaardt set a return catch, and the left-arm spinner had a mishap. In her attempt to take that catch, the ball first hit her hands, and it deflected to her chin.

The Caribbean players were worried about James, who couldn’t continue her spell. Left-arm spinner Qiana Joseph completed that over by delivering five balls.

Later, James was seen sitting on the sidelines with a plaster on the chin.

Stafanie Taylor had a knee problem

Meanwhile, during her hard-fought innings of 44 not out off 41 balls, Stafanie Taylor was feeling discomfortable. She had knee soreness, which will be evaluated before the Saturday morning training. Her batting played a key role for the Caribbean team to set up at least a three-figure score in the first innings.

Due to the heat in Dubai, where the temperature went up to 38°C, several other players were also struggling.

West Indies captain Hayley Matthews confirmed that James had a bit of swelling around her jaw. However, the skipper believes that the tough girl will be available for the next game.

West Indies Women will face the tournament debutant Scotland Women in their next Group B fixture, which has been scheduled for Sunday evening.
