The new playing conditions issued by the BCCI stated that a new rule that will assist captains in selecting their final Playing XI following the toss will be implemented in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.

The change would enable captains to arrive with various team sheets, and depending on the outcome of the toss, they would hand over their final Playing XI with the appropriate impact player.

According to playing conditions clause 1.2.1:

“Each captain shall nominate 11 players plus a maximum of 5 substitute fielders in writing to the IPL Match Referee after the toss. Other than set out in Clause 1.2.9 no player (member of the playing eleven) may be changed after the nomination and prior to the start of play without the consent of the opposing captain.”

This effectively means that a skipper is free to change his eleven up until the start of the match if he decides to do so after winning the toss

The other huge change in playing conditions is punishing uncalled for development by the wicketkeeper in the event that there is shift ready before the player meets the ball.

In the event that the wicket-keeper moves in an unfair manner, either umpire is required to signal dead ball and explain why they did so.

The bowler’s end umpire shall then:

“award the one-run penalty for Wide or No ball, if applicable or award 5 Penalty runs to the batting side. Inform the captain of the fielding side of the reason for this action. Inform the batters and, as soon as practicable, the captain of the batting side of what has occurred.”

The tournament committee had already announced the “Impact Substitution,” which allows for the introduction of a new player from one of the five designated substitutions during the match.
