Surprising the crowd, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) outclass the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) with an outstanding eight-wicket victory at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. With stunning scores from the stellar duo of Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer, PBKS were able to chase down the target with no issues at all. Following their top order succumbing to early losses, it is fair to state that LSG was always going to struggle.

Match Highlights:

LSG Innings: LSG gave the starting batters a chance first, and all they had to show was 171/7 in 20 overs. The top order collapsed, which made matters worse, as wickets kept tumbling even during the middle order. They were bowled out, with captain Rishabh Pant's assessment hitting the nail on the head.

PBKS Chase: Prabhsimran Singh kept the scoreboard ticking as he opened the innings, including an explosive 69-run contribution which was complemented fantastically by Shreyas Iyer, striking a solid half-century as well. With stands like these, PBKS was able to achieve the target in merely 16.2 overs, ending the innings at 172/2.

Post Match Reactions:

  • Rishab Pant (LSG Captain): Pant accepted that LSG did not score nearly enough runs and are on a learning journey when it comes to home conditions. They sustained far too much damage in the way of early losses, and whilst he praised some of his teammates, he did emphasise some remaining difficulties. Defending the choice to have three spinners in the powerplay also paid off, as he reported the pitch backing them up. Despite the loss, he saw many positives and remains hopeful for the tournament.
  • Nehal Wadhera (PBKS): "Shreyas bhai played really well. He told me to express myself and play my natural game".

  • Shreyas Iyer (PBKS Captain): Iyer was impressed with the way PBKS operated and stressed their interdependence in execution of tasks. According to him, no particular combination is a guarantee; however, an overall attitude and approach is rather critical. In the future, he plans on keeping his head down and focusing on the next games.
  • Prabhsimran Singh (Player of the Match): Prabhsimran, post the match, appreciated coach Ricky Ponting for instilling good thoughts. He was pleased to see a few players support their natural game, and his switch hits indeed worked. In his opinion, younger players have to make the most out of a good start in the tournament if they hope to get selected to the Indian side.
