The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is back on track, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announcing the new schedule on May 12, 2025. The tournament, which was suspended on May 9 because of rising tensions between India and Pakistan, will resume on May 17 with a big-ticket encounter between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. A May 10 ceasefire deal cleared the way for the return of the T20 league, much to the relief of fans and stakeholders.
The BCCI decided to resume the IPL following a one-week suspension caused by security issues, such as the sudden cancellation of the Punjab Kings vs. Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala on May 8 due to air raid warnings. With the situation easing, the board has scheduled 17 games across six grounds—Bengaluru, Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad—leading up to the final on June 3, 2025. The new schedule has two double-headers on Sundays so that the season will be over within the new timeframe.
In its press release, the BCCI laid stress on national interest and safety, stating, "After far-reaching consultations with government and security agencies, and with all key stakeholders, the Board has resolved to go ahead with the rest of the season." The board also thanked India's armed forces, stating further, "The BCCI salutes the courage and resilience of India's armed forces, whose initiatives have made it possible for cricket to return safely, while renewing its commitment to the country."
