IPL 2026: Nuwan Thushara files lawsuit against Sri Lanka Cricket over NOC denial
Nuwan Thushara files lawsuit against Sri Lanka Cricket over NOC denial for IPL 2026. Here’s why the case could impact RCB and global player contracts.

Nuwan Thushara, a fast bowler from Sri Lanka, has filed a lawsuit against Sri Lanka Cricket because they refused to grant him a No Objection Certificate which he needed to play in IPL 2026.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru team signed the bowler who now seeks legal action through the Colombo District Court because his current predicament has harmed his ability to work. The case has sparked a major debate around player rights, board authority, and fitness-based selection policies in modern cricket.
Why Nuwan Thushara moved court against Sri Lanka Cricket
Thushara's main argument depends on his contract situation. The 31-year-old claims that his central contract with SLC ended on March 31, 2026, and he had already informed the board of his decision not to renew it.
The pacer states that SLC needs to grant him an NOC after he finishes his central contract period. He explained that missing the IPL would cost him financial losses because it stands as one of the top earning T20 leagues throughout the globe.
The right-arm quick received an official NOC denial on March 24 after he made multiple requests through both verbal and written channels. The scheduled court proceedings for April have created a delay that will most likely prevent him from participating in the initial part of IPL 2026.
SLC’s NOC policy and fitness criteria explained
The newly established fitness rules which SLC implemented will determine their decision-making process. The new system requires players to achieve specific minimum standards which include five different athletic tests that measure their endurance and sprinting and agility and body composition abilities.

All players need to achieve a specific scoring range that establishes their fitness level before they can be selected for team membership or international league play. Thushara reportedly failed to meet these standards, which became the primary reason behind the denial.
The pacer challenges the policy because he claims that NOCs which he received in previous seasons did not require such strict criteria to be followed. His case tests whether a cricket board has the authority to implement internal selection procedures against players who no longer have active contracts.
What this means for RCB with uncertainty of Thushara
The ongoing legal battle has left Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a difficult position. The franchise needs to find new solutions because IPL 2026 has already started and they have not yet reached a resolution. The court decision in Thushara's case will determine his tournament availability because the process will take time.
RCB faces difficulties in planning their bowling strategy because the season has reached its most competitive point. The case will create a significant effect beyond its present consequences because it will establish a critical legal standard for international cricket.
The previous disputes have shown that national boards cannot fully control their players when players participate in overseas leagues. The hearing will determine the future of Sri Lankan cricket because it will establish rules for player movement between international T20 leagues.
