IPL 2026: Ravichandran Ashwin slams KKR's baffling call to bat first under gloomy skies against PBKS
Ravichandran Ashwin questions KKR’s decision to bat first under overcast conditions against PBKS, calling the move surprising during their IPL 2026 clash.

In the 12th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are clashing against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at one of the best stadiums in the world, the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. On winning the toss, Ajinkya Rahane decided to bat first, shocking the audience and cricket lovers. The decision was highly criticised due to overcast conditions.
Former CSK player, Ravichandran Ashwin, questioned the decision since that might affect KKR's performance and match result as well. Ashwin took to Twitter to voice his opinion regarding the decision and also called out KKR. Batting first with a cloud-covered sky is not a good thing to do since it will affect the performance. The ball is likely to swing, putting the batters under pressure.
Moreover, the damp pitch will make the ball slow, affecting the playing conditions. It has been raining in Kolkata since yesterday, and batting first shouldn't have been a choice for KKR. As we write, KKR have already lost two wickets within four overs in the first innings.
"When you know it’s going to be a rain-affected game, with an inexperienced bowling attack at your disposal, you choose to bat first. Interesting thought process," wrote Ashwin on Twitter.
KKR to play without Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine
The 3-time champions are playing without two of their best players, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy, in today's match. Skipper Ajinkya Rahane mentioned that Narine is sick and Chakaravarthy was injured in the previous game while attempting a catch. Hence, the franchise will have to play without them. Both players have performed well in the previous season, but haven't quite gotten the start they would have wanted in this edition.
"So, as I said, we are confident as a unit and have that belief. (Get Sunil Narine up the order maybe?) We will think about that (smiles). Two changes, forced changes. Varun Chakaravarthy unfortunately got injured taking a catch in the last game and Sunil Narine is sick. Powell and Saini are in," said Ajinkya Rahane at the toss.
