Even in their previous contest against the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) were excellent with the early wickets inside the powerplay, thanks to Mohammed Shami, who continued the same dominance with the new ball even in their second encounter against the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

At the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, the visiting captain, Rishabh Pant, won the toss and opted to bowl first on a surface which he claimed would be slow towards the second innings, but kept faith in their strong batting line-up.

After seven overs, the Sunrisers have made their way to 26 runs for the loss of three wickets, which is the lowest powerplay score against Lucknow by any team. That was also the fourth-lowest score by the Sunrisers inside the powerplay in IPL history.

That was the moment when the LSG captain decided to bring Digvesh Rathi back into the attack. The very first ball of the over was a tossed-up, slower delivery and well outside the off stump. Liam Livingtone set himself up for the paddle. But the slowness of the surface cost him as he was through with the shot.

The ball just never arrived, and when it did, all he could do was pop it off the edge, and it then brushed his right shoulder. Pant was initially hopping to his left side in an appeal but changed his direction, dived, and completed the fine one-handed catch.

SRH suffer early with consistent wickets

The home side lost their opener, Abhishek Sharma, for a two-ball duck while Travis Head was early into the shot against Mohammad Shami. Head, on seven runs in eight balls, got the shot early and spooned it into the hands of the fielder, Aiden Markram.

Prince Yadav came later into the attack and went through the drive of Ishan Kishan to send the latter back into the hut for one run in four balls. The entire responsibility to take the side to a strong score remained on Heinrich Klassen and Nitish Kumar Reddy, who already crossed the 40-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Brief Scores: SRH 108/4 (Nitish Reddy 42, Heinrich Klassen 42*, Mohammad Shami 2/9) vs LSG
