For the last two encounters in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have tried the wide yorker bowling in the death overs, and on both occasions were smashed around the park.

Jamie Overton, despite being a tall bowler, tried the same strategy from round the wicket, and Ravichandran Ashwin, the former CSK player, has slammed the thought process of the management as he compared the same copied strategy from the SA20 and Major League Cricket (MLC).

Ashwin lashed out at the CSK team management, led by head coach Stephen Fleming, for applying the same death bowling template across the T20 leagues around the world.

“I saw it in my dream. Wiaan Mulder is bowling a wide yorker in the SA20 round the stumps, Nandre Burger is coming from round the stumps and bowling wide yorkers. Then, two guys in MLC (Texas Super Kings) are bowling wide yorkers around the stumps. Then, here in the yellow dress, they’re doing the same.Ashwin said in a viral video.

Anshul Kamboj went for 52 runs in his quota of four overs, while Jamie Overton leaked 42 runs in three overs. The visitors gave away 92 runs in their last five overs of the first innings and lost the momentum badly against RCB, who ended up with 250.

“Character change, name change, Anshul Kamboj, Jamie Overton bowling wide yorkers from round the wicket. What is this plan, guys? To plan against CSK, just watch SA20. It's enough. Every batsman, every bowler. The former Indian all-rounder addressed.

“Strategy remains the same. Jamie Overton is such a tall guy. His strength is not bowling yorkers. They are making him bowl wide yorkers from around the stumps. There should be two things. You have to plan as per the batter and bowler's strengths. The veteran concluded.

CSK start IPL 2026 campaign with three successive defeats

Despite being 30/3 in the third over of the chase, CSK did well to get themselves over the 200-run mark and decreased the losing margin to 43 runs. Sarfaraz Khan slammed 50 runs in 25 balls with the help of eight boundaries and a pair of sixes, while Overton drilled 37 runs in just 16 balls.

CSK are yet to open their account in three clashes and will have a five-day break before the home clash against the Delhi Capitals (DC). That could prove to be a do-or-die clash for them.
