The Southern Derby of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) started with incredible excitement and tension among both camps. Bengaluru has been coming off a seven-day break post their opening victory against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the same venue- the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Chennai is coming off their two successive defeats against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and needed a special performance against the defending champions to open their account. They won the toss and decided to bowl first in a ground where batting remains the biggest talking point.
Virat Kohli’s no-look six leaves fans and commentators stunned
It was not an easy surface to start for the two RCB opening batters, Virat Kohli and Phil Salt. The latter nailed a short through the point region where the ball stopped after dropping on the ground, which pointed out the slowness of the venue for the clash.

After three overs, the home side reached 17/0 without a single boundary and needed to play a big shot to break the jail. On the second ball of the fourth over against Matt Henry, Kohli flicked the length delivery from outside off stump, using his wrist, and put it into the mid-wicket region over the stands.
On the fifth delivery of the same over, he drilled the same bowler back pass him for a stunning boundary.

Virat was dropped earlier by Shivam Dube at the long-on region, and those shots from the right-handed batter were putting salt into the injury. The Delhi-born just started to get in his groove when he got another boundary before being dismissed for 28 runs in 18 balls.

It was a good ball from Anshul Kamboj as Kohli charged down the surface and went with the hard length. The ball was banged into the pitch and got the extra bounce as it lobbed up towards long-on, where Dube didn’t attempt the same mistake.
RCB finished the powerplay with 51/1 in six overs as Salt reached 20* off 15 balls.
Brief Scores (at the time of writing)- RCB 76/1 (Phil Salt 41*, Anshul Kamboj 1/25) vs CSK
