It was a bit surprising decision from Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain, Ajinkya Rahane, to win the toss and opted to bat first on a surface which was under covers for a long time and was expected to help the bowlers with swing and seam movement in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Eden Gardens.
KKR came into the clash, having failed to open their account with two successive defeats against the Mumbai Indians and the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Meanwhile, Punjab has gained the momentum with back-to-back wins over the Gujarat Titans and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Xavier Bartlett removes Cameron Green and Finn Allen
Xavier Bartlett had not been able to show his magic in this season’s IPL, but during this contest, he found early help with the new ball on a surface that contributed to swing and seam movement. On the second delivery of the over, Finn Allen top-edged the pitched-up delivery in the air before the Punjab fielders’ comedy of errors helped them in the cause.
After being beaten on the third ball, Bartlett finally got the outside edge of Allen for six runs in seven runs. It was a length delivery and took it away from Allen, who wanted to belt it down the ground and ended up getting the outside edge into the hands of Prabhsimran Singh.

Cameron Green opened his book with a lucky boundary into the third man region. But his stay didn’t go long enough as he pushed away from the body and nicked off the very next delivery to get caught behind the stumps for four runs.
Rain interrupts Kolkata’s batting vs PBKS
Green went back to the hut under massive pressure with 24 runs in 14 balls during this season. At 25/2 in 3.4 overs, KKR needed a break for some planning as they were helped off with the rain that paused the action, with the covers being rolled on the ground.

KKR would need a good score on the board with the three-time champions missing their experienced spinners- Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, for this clash due to injury and flu, respectively.
