The start of their T20 World Cup 2026 journey against Scotland at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata hasn’t started sweetly as Italy face a massive injury setback with their captain, Wayne Madsen, being ruled out of the remainder of their opening fixture against Scotland. He dislocated his left shoulder while leading the team.

The incident happened on the third delivery of the fourth over of the first innings when Wayne Madsen dived to stop the powerful hit from the Scotland opening batter, George Munsey. But Madsen fell awkwardly on one of the practice pitches, and when he got up, he was in serious pain and clutched his shoulder.

The physio came to attend to him before he left the field. The absence of the 42-year-old is a blow to the Italy side as his participation for the rest of the game is ruled out. He is also expected to be checked in his neck to get the future assessment for the rest of the T20 WC.

Italy won the toss and decided to field first on a surface which he reckoned would be hard to defend in the second innings. But Scotland got off a flying start with a 126-run opening partnership. The southpaw, Munsey, has smashed 84 runs in 54 balls at a strike rate of 155.56 with the help of 13 boundaries and a couple of sixes.

His opening partner, Michael Jone, has slammed 37 runs in 30 balls at a strike rate of 123.33 with the help of two sixes and one boundary. Their number three batter, Brandon McMullen, cracked an unbeaten 41 runs in 18 balls at a strike rate of 227.78 with the help of four over boundaries.

The late finish came from 22 runs in just five balls in the last over against Thomas Draca as Scotland ended up with 207 runs for the loss of four wickets in their allotted 20 overs. It was also their first 200+ score in the history of the T20 World Cups.

Brief Scores: Scotland 207/4 (George Munsey 84, Brendon McMullen 41, Ali Hasan 1/21) vs Italy 32/1 (JJ Smutts 22, Michael Leask 1/4)
