Jack Alabaster, the esteemed former New Zealand legspinner, passed away at the age of 93 in Cromwell on Tuesday night. Regarded as one of the finest legspin bowlers produced by New Zealand, Alabaster’s cricketing journey left an indelible mark on the sport.

Having represented his nation in 21 Test matches from 1955 to 1972, Alabaster exhibited exceptional skill, claiming 49 wickets throughout his illustrious career. Notably, he played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s early successes in Test cricket, contributing to the team’s first four Test victories.

A cricketing legend departs

Among his memorable performances was his outstanding display in the series against South Africa in 1961-62, where he bagged 22 wickets in five Tests, playing a crucial role in securing New Zealand’s first-ever series draw against the formidable South African side. His remarkable match haul of 8 for 180 in the third Test remains etched in cricketing history as New Zealand clinched their maiden Test win overseas.

Alabaster’s impact extended beyond the international arena, as he represented Otago in domestic cricket, amassing a total of 500 wickets in 143 first-class matches. His dedication and skill earned him recognition as one of the finest cricketers of his generation.
