Kane Williamson speculated to travel to India for World Cup despite injury

Even if he isn’t fully healthy enough to play in the 50-over world cup in India later this year, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson could travel with the team. Lead trainer Gary Stead conceded, on Wednesday, that they would ‘totally’ hope to use Williamson in a tutor type job in the event that he stays inaccessible to play.

Kane Williamson, who was attempting to take a catch during Gujarat Titans’ first match of the ongoing Indian Premier League, suffered an ACL injury to his right knee. He has had surgery and is racing against time to be ready for the World Cup

“It’s still far too early to know. He’s had the operation and, to date, what we know, that’s been successful. So he is in the very, very early stages of his rehab programme.” Stead said ahead of the five-match series against Pakistan.

While Stead would rather not preclude the chance of Williamson getting back to the side for the masterpiece occasion, to be played from October 5 to November 19, the possibilities appear to be somber.

“It’s obviously pretty non-weight-bearing at this stage, and he’s in a brace. It’s really just meeting milestones as we go. Our line around Kane, at the moment, is still it’s unlikely that he will be available, but we certainly don’t want to rule out a person of his class and caliber, and the things he brings to this team, too early in case there is that chance still.

“It’s [schedule] not out yet, so there’s not much we can do about that, so it does keep our options reasonably open without knowing the venues and who we are playing at different venues.

“So, it does make it pretty difficult to finalize plans right now. But that again just gives players opportunities that are within the squad now to come out here and play for New Zealand.”
