From the Captain’s photo from 2019, Kane Williamson remains the only one still around and leading his side. With all that has gone around in the four years and despite all the changes Kane Williamson stands to show his endurance. He has come to this point after going through it all though.
A year ago, Kane Williamson stepped down from Test Captaincy to indicate that a change was imminent. He remained in white-ball Cricket but came very close to missing the big event after suffering an ACL Tear during the first game of the IPL.
He was all but ruled out at that moment. Kane Williamson now finds himself in Chepauk giving a smile so familiar and bringing the calmness that is associated to Kane Williamson. Addressing a press conference, Kane Williamson was quick to say there has not been much change in ODIs from 2019 to 2023. He had his point with this being the first World Cup in a while without rule changes taking place during the cycle.

The timing of Kane Williamson’s return works all the better. The first two games came on flat tracks in Ahmedabad in Hyderabad. They now encounter a track that will give them a high degree of turn. Such a track is where Kane Williamson’s skillset will find a great deal of value.
The venue they face is not known for its high scores with the last 300-plus total coming 12 ODIs ago. The spinners tend to find a lot of help as seen in the India vs Australia fixture, making patience a key factor. Kane Williamson is a proven performer when the track has help or during games with middling scores.
The 2015 World Cup encounter with Australia in the Group stage and a couple of his knocks in the 2019 World Cup are evidence of his ability. In those encounters, Kane Williamson played his way in on asking conditions. In a time were ODIs are becoming extensions of T20s, Kane Williamson continues to prove that Test match patience has a place.
This time around though he has support. Devon Conway and Tom Latham are strong against spin as well. Daryl Mitchell too is a talented player down the order along with the likes of Rachin Ravindra and Will Young. He has a well rounded batting line-up around him, easing the pressure on him. They do face a challenge though with Bangladesh posing a very strong spin attack.
Another factor often forgotten is the quality of attacks. Bowling in bilaterals tends to be taken on easier with many teams resting their best bowlers. Come the World Cup though and the best bowlers are back. Not only are they back but they also put experimentation aside. This is where the lynchpins of the side come into play.
In the case of England, Joe Root had a terrible lead-up to the tournament. Facing some quality bowling in the World Cup though has brought the best out of him. He stands with two strong scores. Kane Williamson finds himself in a similar spot.
He only played 12 ODIs since the last World Cup. His numbers have been far from good. On Friday though, there is every possibility of Kane Williamson finding his touch and bringing back the vibe of 2019.
