Sri Lanka and Australia are facing each other in the crucial Group B game of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 on Monday night (February 16). While the hosts Sri Lankan squad has already suffered due to injury, the bad luck continues, as another key Sri Lankan player left the field due to an injury during the crucial group stage match against Australia.

Matheesha Pathirana left field after his left calf injury

After Sri Lanka sent under-pressure Australia to bat first at Pallekele, the Aussie openers provided a strong start. The 23-year-old Lankan right-arm fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana started to bowl as the first change bowler in the game, but he couldn't complete his first over, as he had to leave the ground after bowling only four balls.

Matheesha collapsed on the ground, clutching his left calf. The Sri Lankan physiotherapist provided immediate treatment before the fast bowler left the ground with assistance from support staff.

Matheesha Pathirana will not bowl further in this game

The Lankan fast bowler didn't return to the field, as he got treatment in the dressing room. According to the ESPNcricinfo report, Matheesha will be sent for the scans soon after the end of the match.

According to the ESPNcricinfo report, a statement claimed, "Matheesha Pathirana experienced discomfort in his left leg calf while bowling during the match and was unable to continue. He will not bowl further in this game. A scan will be conducted tomorrow to determine the extent of the injury."

Matheesha conceded three runs in his first four balls of the match, where he delivered two dots and one wide. Due to injury, he couldn't complete his first over of the match, as Dasun Shanaka completed that over. Australia scored 181 all out in 20 overs.

Just a few days ago, Sri Lankan major player Wanindu Hasaranga was ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury.
