India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has been incredibly successful in the white-ball formats, with trophies in the Asia Cup and the Champions Trophy 2025. However, he wasn’t as clinical in the Test matches by facing a clean sweep against South Africa at home, which came just 12 months after their home whitewash by a 3-0 margin against New Zealand.

There isn’t any speculation on Gambhir’s white-ball coaching with the Indian side preparing themselves for the home white-ball series against New Zealand, followed by the T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. There is, however, a question about his red-ball coaching future as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approached VVS Laxman for the role.

As per the latest report, Gambhir’s latest Test series as the head coach will be in South Africa. In case of the ODIs and T20Is, he will stay in the role of the head coach until the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. This is also the last series, as per the current contract of the head coach.

Gautam Gambhir’s Test coaching future revealed

The new coach of the Indian side for the red-ball games is expected to be VVS Laxman, the former Indian batter and the head of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Laxman has also shouldered the responsibility of the Indian side when the former coach, Rahul Dravid, was on a break.

“However, it is learnt that the legendary batter of yesteryears is happy being the 'Head of Cricket' at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. We have not spoken to VVS Laxman either officially or unofficially. The BCCI has complete trust in Gautam Gambhir, and no discussion has been held regarding this matter.” The BCCI official expressed.

The board, as per the report, has been considering the idea of a new India coach and one overseas coach. The official announcement is expected to come after the T20 World Cup 2026 or the IPL 2026. Shubman Gill will be the next T20 captain after the event, as Suryakumar Yadav’s tenure will come to an end.
