After a remarkable career that spanned over more than a decade, Legendary Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga on Tuesday announced his retirement from all formats of the game. The 38-year-old is considered among one of the finest T20 bowlers and his crucial role in 2014 T20 World Cup that led Sri Lanka to a title victory is remembered by fans even today.

Mallinga stated – “Today is a very special day for me. I want to thank all my well-wishers, the Sri Lanka cricket board, Mumbai Indians, Melbourne Stars, Kent Cricket Club, Rangpur Riders, Guyana Warriors, Maratha Warriors and Montreal Tigers for supporting me throughout my T20 career. Today I have decided to give 100 percent rest to my T20 bowling shoes,” ‘’Now it’s time for me to share my experience with young cricketers who want to play franchise cricket and for their national team”, concluded Mallinga. 

Lasith Malinga made his Test debut against Australia in July 2004. In a span of days after his test debut, Malinga played his first ODI cricket. He has played 295 matches where he picked 390 wickets. With an amazing strike rate of 16.60, an economy of 7.07 and an average of 19.68, Mallinga was the first bowler to bag 100 T20I wickets. He finishes fourth in the highest wicket-taker category followed by Dwayne Bravo, Imran Tahir and Sunil Narine. Popularly known as ‘Rathgama Express’ his toe-crushing yorker performances gave him the title of ‘Yorker king’. Malinga had retired from Tests long back in 2011 and from ODIs in 2019.
