On the morning of August 24, India’s veteran Test number three batter, Cheteshwar Pujara, hung up his shoes from the longest format of the game. On the very next day, his wife shared an emotional note for the Rajkot-born as she reflected on the calm approach to life and the game of the batter.

Pujara finished as the eighth leading run-getter in the red-ball format for the Blue Brigade with 7195 runs in 176 innings at an average of 43.60 and a strike rate of 44.36, with the help of 19 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He finishes just behind the former captain, Sourav Ganguly.

“Be in the present as the present is the present of the supreme presence- a guiding principle of the Bhagavad Gita, which is something you have been living by for quite some time now, and hope it continues to guide you in this next phase! As you bid goodbye to your first love, passion, and the sport you love so much, I am glad you always gave it your all.Puja Pabari, Pujara’s wife, wrote on Instagram.

Since Rahul Dravid’s retirement from the longest format, Pujara was touted to be the next best number three for India in Tests. Moreover, his contribution in playing most balls was incredible as he contributed immensely with 531 runs during the BGT 2018/19, which turned out to be India’s first red-ball series victory against Australia down under. He also batted brilliantly at the Gabba during the BGT 2020/21 for his half-century.

“From knowing nothing about cricket to loving you and the sport through your eyes - your journey has been a true education in life’s lessons for me, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have gone through the highs and lows of your career together!Puja wrote.

“I will miss cheering you on the field, following the unshakeable routines, and at times maybe also the anxiousness before a match/series. For all the missed celebrations and adjustments made to prioritize cricket, let’s make up for it now.Cheteshwar Pujara’s wife concluded in the note.
