BJP Secures Historic Victory in West Bengal Elections 2026
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has secured a resounding victory in the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026. This marks a significant political shift, as West Bengal—long considered a stronghold of the opposition—has, for the first time, delivered a clear mandate in favour of the BJP, further strengthening Modi’s dominance across the country.

For over 15 years, the state was governed by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been one of the most vocal critics of Modi and his policies. However, in a landmark result with far-reaching implications for India’s political landscape, the BJP is set to win more than 205 out of 294 assembly seats, delivering a major setback to the already weakened opposition.
According to trends reported around 8 PM, the BJP had already won 99 seats and was leading in 107 others, taking its tally to 206. In comparison, the TMC had won 44 seats and was leading in 37, bringing its total to 81. Data from the Election Commission of India (ECI) indicates that the BJP has comfortably crossed the majority mark of 148 seats and is poised to form the government in West Bengal for the first time.
Following the party’s decisive win, Prime Minister Modi addressed the nation, congratulating the people of West Bengal and Assam, as well as BJP workers for their efforts. While vote counting is still underway and final figures are awaited, the trends clearly point to a commanding victory for the BJP, with the party expected to cross the 200-seat mark in the state.
