LSG roped in former U-19 fielding coach ahead of IPL 2026

The Lucknow Super Giants have started their new team restructuring process because they want to achieve their first championship victory in the 2026 Indian Premier League. 

The franchise has maintained its support for skipper Rishabh Pant despite their disappointing results from the previous season because he will continue to lead the team after last season which saw him join the team through a high-profile transfer. LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka has publicly reiterated that the goal is no longer just playoffs because it is now required to win the championship trophy. 

Head coach Justin Langer continues in his role, providing stability at the top, but several notable changes have been made to the support staff to sharpen the team’s competitive edge.

Coaching overhaul signals LSG’s serious title intent

Abhay Sharma has been appointed as LSG's new fielding coach. Sharma brings a wealth of experience, having worked with India’s Under-19 teams, the Indian women’s side, and most recently guiding Uganda to their historic T20 World Cup appearance in 2024. The organization hired him to address one of LSG's most significant weaknesses which they displayed during their previous two seasons through their inconsistent field performance.

He replaces legendary South African great Jonty Rhodes, whose tenure ended as part of the wider restructuring. LSG has enhanced its backroom staff by hiring Tom Moody as Director of Cricket while naming former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson as Strategic Director.
