Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans get a boost as their key player, Dewald Brevis, is recovering quickly. Ahead of their second match in the ongoing IPL 2026 season, a major update arrives on the young South African batter.

CSK got a shocking defeat in their first match against the Rajasthan Royals on March 30 at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. For their next fixture, the Yellow brigade is all set to face the Punjab Kings (PBKS) today (April 2) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Why is Dewald Brevis' return important for CSK?

Multiple injury issues harmed the team’s tactics before the IPL 2026 opener. Nathan Ellis, an Australian frontline pacer, was ruled out of the entire season because of injury. MS Dhoni, the icon and former captain, missed the match against the Rajasthan Royals and is expected to miss a few more as well.

The injury to Dewald Brevis came as a major shock, as the emerging batter was expected to be a guaranteed starter in the line-up against the Rajasthan Royals. Without Brevis and Dhoni in the playing combination, CSK handed a brutal reality check. Though the pitch at the Barsapara Stadium was a bit tricky to bat on in the first innings. In their previous match, it was the overseas all-rounder Jamie Overton who played most of the batting part for CSK against 43 runs in 36 balls.

In Guwahati, Super Kings got bundled for only 127 runs. Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sarfaraz Khan, Ayush Mhatre… most of the batters who were in runs before the IPL 2026 campaign lost wickets cheaply against the Rajasthan Royals bowling line-up.

Will Brevis play against PBKS tonight?

Will Dewald Brevis play against the Punjab Kings tonight in Chepauk? The question remains. The good part is that the batter looked good in the practice session with the team and can make a return soon. According to fresh reports, the young South African batter looked fit and confident while training with the squad. His return to practice signals positive news for CSK as the team prepares for the upcoming matches this season.

During the pre-match ceremony of the RR vs CSK match, head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed that Dewald Brevis was ruled out of the team's IPL 2026 opener against RR in Guwahati on Monday (March 30) due to a side strain during training. It is unclear whether Brevis will be fit for CSK's second home game against PBKS today.

During the middle of the IPL 2025 season, Brevis was signed as a mid-season injury replacement for pacer Gurjapneet Singh. The inclusion of Brevis proved immensely effective as the batter took very little time to show his capabilities in the T20 format. The 22-year-old middle-order batter registered 225 runs from six games at an average of 37.50 and a strike-rate of 180 in IPL 2025.
