“Absolutely ridiculous” — Marizanne Kapp slams Cricket Australia over Anaya Bangar's WBBL pathway

The veteran all-rounder of South Africa’s women's side, Marizanne Kapp, has slammed Cricket Australia (CA) for their decision to clear India’s Ananya Bangar to play women’s cricket in Australia, as she reckoned that transgender athletes should not be allowed to compete in women’s cricket. 

Kapp made the revelation on her Instagram story after Anaya, the daughter of former Indian cricketer and coach Sanjay Bangar, was cleared by CS to be part of the women’s community and the Premier Cricket League across Australia.

The complaint by the Protea star has come just a few days after Anaya publicly spoke about the decision of Cricket Australia and her plans to make a comeback to competitive cricket, with the game potentially being in sight from March 2027.

“Absolutely ridiculous, this should not be allowed.” Kapp wrote on her Instagram, in addition to sharing the news. She is the first high-profile player to speak on the matter and is one of the most successful players in women’s cricket across the three formats for more than a decade.

Kapp has slammed over 1490 runs in 101 innings in the WBBL at a strike rate of nearly 110, thanks to her six half-centuries, including her best season of 232 runs in 2019/20 in 10 innings. With the ball, she picked up 141 wickets in 138 innings at an average of 20.48 and an economy rate of 5.71.

Cricket Australia clears Anaya Bangar for elite women's cricket from March 2027

Anaya expressed gratitude towards Cricket Australia for providing her with the chance of playing cricket. She played age-group men’s cricket for Mumbai before undergoing a gender-affirming surgery in March 2026, completing the transition which began in 2022. 

“Today is an important day for me because after several years away from competitive cricket, I can finally speak about a pathway back to the sport that has been such a significant part of my life,” Anaya said in a statement.

“I am preparing to return to women's cricket in Australia to pursue elite cricket from March 2027. I am not claiming that I have made a team. I am saying that I have been allowed to compete for one. And I intend to work for it.” She informed.
