Meg Lanning chooses finalists for upcoming ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025
The former captain of the Australia side, Meg Lanning, who won World Cup seven times in the 50-over format, has selected the finalists for the upcoming 2025 season of the Women's World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

The former Australia captain, Meg Lanning, has revealed the favorites for the upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, set to start on September 30 between the hosts India and Sri Lanka. Australia, the defending champions, have all the knowledge of winning trophies, and Lanning has won seven of those in the 50-over format.
She led the side in the semifinal of the 2017 edition, where they fell short against the spirited Harmanpreet Kaur-led side, who later went on to miss their maiden title in the final against England at Lord’s. Lanning felt that India, due to their home conditions and the recent progress in the format, would be the main competitors.
“I know Australia has dominated a lot of it, but it's certainly not a foregone conclusion. I'd still love Australia to win, obviously, but I think India is the main competitor. I think India is a significant challenge to everybody. Talent-wise, they're as good as anyone, and I think they are really starting to understand how to win.” Lanning expressed while speaking to ICC Digital.

Apart from the hosts, Lanning shed light on some of the other teams that could pull up their socks in the marquee event with a surprise. Australia will start their defense against New Zealand on October 01 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
“They (India) are well led by Harmanpreet Kaur, and there are really good players who have got some good experience now. So I expect them to do well. And if they put it together and play well, I don't think anyone can actually get close to them. They are very good. So you've got England, who are always strong.” The 33-year-old Singapore-born addressed.
“And then, you can never write off New Zealand, too. They showed in that T20 World Cup (2024) recently that if you time your run really nicely, then you never know what can happen. So that's the beauty of the game - there's some really good competitive sides out there.” Meg Lanning concluded the discussion.
