Mohsin Naqvi unlikely to get another term as ACC chief after Asia Cup trophy row

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, is very likely to be in the last few months of his tenure after the two years of refusing to let any other giving away the Asia Cup to the winning side. The reports have revealed the development after such scenes took place for the Indian women’s team, post their final victory against Sri Lanka women in the Asia Cup 2027 in Dubai.  

Naqvi’s two-year contract ends in April 2027, and he is very unlikely to be elected for the next term. For his re-election, Naqvi is very unlikely to get the necessary support from the members of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

Irrespective of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) stance, it’s hard to imagine the backing from the other two countries. He is extremely unpopular in India, thanks to the statements about the country after the Pahalgam terror attack.

The BCCI took a stance in the men’s Asia Cup 2025, where they didn’t accept the trophy from him, which was seen as him leaving the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. And on September 13, the same happened with the women’s team not coming to the presentation ceremony after beating Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final, when Naqvi waited to give the prize.

The individual, as the ACC president, rotates among the full member boards- India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh- on a two-year term, which is decided at the AGM (Annual General Meeting). Each extension of this term adds a year rather than resetting their term.

Both the Indian men’s and women’s teams refused to take their Asia Cup championship trophies from the ACC president Mohsin Naqvi in the political protest. The Suryakumar Yadav-led side did the same in 2025 after beating Pakistan, while the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side took the same stance in 2026 after beating Sri Lanka in the final. 

The BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, expressed that it was their collective decision not to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi upon winning the Asia Cup.

“We had taken a conscious decision considering all prevailing aspects, and our position had been communicated to the ACC in advance, that the Indian team would not participate in the trophy presentation under the circumstances.”

“Given the circumstances and the sentiments prevailing in the country, the BCCI felt that it would not be appropriate for the team to receive the trophy in the proposed manner. This was a firm institutional decision, reflective of the position we have maintained, and was not directed at the players, the tournament or the sport.”
