The former Indian captain, MS Dhoni, was seen in the stands, attending the first ODI of the three-match series between England and India at Edgbaston in Birmingham as the national side found themselves in a strong position, with the home side losing six wickets for 107 runs.
At the start of the game, Dhoni's wife, Sakshi, shared an image of the venue on her Instagram account. Many doubted that the former World Cup-winning captain could turn up for the contest. And he finally did, as the video went viral on social media platforms.

Recently, Dhoni was seen to be present during the third T20I clash of the recently concluded five-match series between the two sides at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Dhoni, who generally keeps himself away from the action, has turned up in the games quite regularly. The Ranchi-born, during the ODI clash, was seen to be sitting in the stands beside a child and enjoying some popcorn.
The wicket-keeper batter didn’t feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) due to injury. With the franchise deciding to get rid of their head coach, Stephen Fleming, Dhoni could play a massive role in the selection of the new head coach.
England recover from 107/6 as Root and Dawson steady the innings at Edgbaston
The England captain, Harry Brook, won the toss and decided to bat first on a surface which was anticipated to get slow in the second innings. After a steady start of a 61-run opening stand between Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell, the hosts were reduced to 107/6 in the space of just 56 balls. There was a chance of them getting bundled out quickly.
However, Joe Root and Liam Dawson recovered them with a 121-run stand for the seventh wicket. The latter smacked 68 runs off 83 balls at a strike rate of 82, with the help of six boundaries and one six.
England made their way to 250/8 after 46 overs as Root was unbeaten on 69 runs off 72 balls. He could add only seven more runs after that as they were bundled out for 258 un 47.5 overs. India's left-arm spinner, Axar Patel, finished with four wickets in his 9.5 overs.
