India already made their way into the history books with the largest capacity cricket stadium of 132000 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad a few years ago. Since then, the ground has hosted all the high-profile games, including the 2023 ODI World Cup final, the Indian Premier League (IPL) finals, and the recent T20 World Cup 2026 final, that the Suryakumar Yadav-led side went on to win.

That has taken the attention away from the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, which has hosted many top-notch ICC events in the past, including the ODI World Cup 2011 final. But the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) brought a new idea and planning for a brand-new stadium.

Navi Mumbai starts groundwork for new 100000-seater stadium

The MCA has started the process of getting land to build its new stadium in Navi Mumbai, which is expected to have a capacity of 100000. Their president, Ajinkya Naik, met Vijay Singh, who is the managing director of the CIDCO, over the last few weeks, and they are hopeful of getting land soon.

“A few months ago, Hon’ble Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed a vision that the Mumbai Cricket Association should strive to build a stadium with a capacity of 1,00,000. Considering the tremendous enthusiasm of cricket fans and the rich legacy of our association, the Hon’ble CM has been very positive about this project and its potential implementation in Navi Mumbai.” Naik expressed.

“We can develop a truly world-class stadium with modern amenities. I have met Vijay Singhal, Managing Director of CIDCO, on multiple occasions, and the MCA has initiated the necessary processes to take this vision forward.” The MCA president addressed.

The MCA president will meet Fadnavis for the same reason and request more action for the project.

What change will it bring in Indian cricket history?

Mumbai, at the moment, has the Wankhede Stadium for all international and domestic games with a capacity of 33108, as demand among the fans has grown, and the association wants to have a bigger stadium to accommodate more fans.

In a public function last year in May, Fadnavis promised to give the land to MCA, where they can build a new stadium with a capacity of 1,00,000.

“Last year, Kale (late MCA president Amol Kale) and Ajinkya Naik (The current MCA President) had come to me with a request that the MCA needed to build one more stadium of a minimum 1,00,000-crowd capacity. And now today, I’m assuring Ajinkya that if you come with a proposal, then the Maharashtra government will give you an appropriate, good piece of land for the MCA to build its own big stadium.” Fadnavis reckoned.

This change will make a significant movement in Indian cricketMumbai will get more chances to host the high-profile games with better structure and facilities.
