The former England captain, Nasser Hussain, praised the Indian players after their clinical bowling performance on the fourth day of the third Test between England and India at Lord’s. Even though the Essex batter lauded all the bowlers, there was one particular player for whom he was so happy.

Hussain reckoned that the veteran pacer, Mohammed Siraj, is such a fine player, especially with all the aggression and emotions he shows in the field. He also reckoned the Hyderabad-born would be the best in the job among all the players in the side, and it would be a pleasure to have him in the side as a captain.

“He is someone that you love to have in your team. Because when it’s important and when people want, you know, the Indian fans are desperate for their cricketers to show some passion, and no one does it better in the present side than Mohammed Siraj.” Hussain expressed at the end of the fourth day’s play when India still needed 138 runs to win with six wickets in hand.

Hussain is right in all respects. Every time there is a need for a wicket and some aggression in the middle, Siraj would step up. As Ravi Shastri has addressed him all the time, the right-arm pacer is a workhorse for the side.

In the first innings of this Lord’s Test, he picked up two wickets. The first one was off Jamie Smith, who put a fine fifty-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Brydon Carse. The ball held its line and got the outside edge of the wicket-keeper batter. He also sent back Carse, who ended up 56 runs in the first innings to carry England to 387.

In the second innings, he found some rewards. Ben Duckett was early in the shot as he miscued the short ball straight into the hands of the mid-on fielder. Ollie Pope was never in control during his 17-ball stay in the middle as he managed only four runs before getting leg before the wicket. Siraj finished the second innings with figures of 2/31 in 13 overs.
