Just three days before the expected announcement of the 15-member squad for India in the Asia Cup 2025, huge news has dropped on the selection. The reports have claimed that the middle-order experienced batter, Shreyas Iyer, isn’t likely to feature for the Blue Brigade in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which is just four weeks away.
The Asia Cup 2025 will be played in the shortest format, keeping an eye on the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. Iyer was a vital member of the title-winning Indian side under Rohit Sharma during the Champions Trophy 2025 earlier this year at the same venues. Many reckoned that he should return to the side to strengthen their side.

Iyer finished the Champions Trophy 2025 as India’s second leading run-getter with 243 runs in five innings at an average of 48.60 and a strike rate of 79.41 with several match-winning contributions. However, his T20I game perhaps hasn’t impressed the selectors, as he was dropped from the national side.

The Mumbai-born had a fabulous IPL 2025 where he led the Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final of the event and ended as the runners-up of the season. The right-handed batter smacked 604 runs in 17 innings of the current edition at an average of over 50 and a strike rate of above 175, with the help of six half-centuries at the best score of unbeaten 97 runs.
Before playing his last T20I clash in December 2023, Iyer clubbed 1104 runs in 47 innings at an average of more than 30 and a strike rate of 136.12 with the help of eight fifties at the best score of 74 runs.
Along with Iyer, the reports have claimed that the opening batter of the side, Yashasvi Jaiswal, is also unlikely to earn a place in the playing eleven. One of the biggest reasons for the selection could be the balance of the current squad, which has earned so much success around the globe in the shortest format recently.
