“Not captaincy material…”- Axar Patel reacts to trolls for his leadership due to language barrier
The left-arm spin all-rounder of the Indian cricket team, Axar Patel, has reacted to the trolls he received for his leadership role due to his language barrier of not being fluent in speaking the English language.

India’s left-arm spin all-rounder, Axar Patel, took up the leadership role of the Delhi Capitals after the departure of Rishabh Pant. Patel was decent in the role as DC started fluently before missing the chance to qualify for the playoffs by a whisker. Axar has now opened up on how people didn’t use to consider him for captaincy because he is not a fluent speaker of the English language.
The veteran Indian spinner, who has smashed over 600 runs in every format for the national side, has been a successful member of the IPL. The left-handed batter collected 1916 runs in 124 innings of the IPL at an average of 22 and a strike rate of 133.98 with the help of three fifties at the best score of 66.
“People start saying, ‘Oh, he is not captaincy material, he doesn’t speak English. How will he talk? Yeh hai, voh hai’. Arre! A captain’s work is not just to talk. A captain’s work is to know the player and see how to get the best out of him. What’s his strength, what’s his weakness? Captain knows that I have this player and what I need to do to get work out of him.” Axar said in an interaction with the ‘Indian Express.’
Axar Patel slams trolls for putting language barrier in leadership duties
Last year, Axar smashed 263 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 157.48 with three fifties at the best score of 43, besides bagging five wickets in 11 innings at an average of nearly 58. He is expected to be retained by the Capitals for the next IPL 2026 season.
“But yeah, if we say ‘personality’ chahiye, acha English bolna chahiye – that’s a perception made by the public based on their own thinking. I captained the Delhi Capitals this year and got a lot of praise. I think if more of this happens, more will change in the coming time. People must change their personal thinking.” Axar noted.
“Stop thinking ‘oh, his personality is good, he can speak English – so he is captain material’. One thing about captaincy is that there should be no language barrier. It’s all about what you see and what the media is showing. How active are you on social media? How do you talk? People judge you on all that. Everyone likes to give opinions these days.” India’s left-arm spinner addressed.
