Pakistan’s cricket team is set to embark on a tour of Sri Lanka next month, as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently announced the schedule for the much-anticipated series. The tour will feature two Test matches between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, which are part of the ongoing World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle.
The action will kick off with the first Test taking place at the Galle International Cricket Stadium from July 16 to July 20. Following that, the teams will move to the Singhalese Sports Club in Colombo for the second Test, scheduled to be held from July 24 to July 28.
The second Test will be particularly significant for Pakistan, as they return to the Singhalese Sports Club for the first time since 2014. In their previous encounter at this venue, Pakistan suffered a defeat against Sri Lanka by 105 runs. Throughout their history, Pakistan has played six Test matches at this venue, with one victory, one loss, and four draws to their name.
Before the Test series gets underway, the Pakistan team will arrive in Sri Lanka on July 9. To acclimatize to the conditions and fine-tune their preparations, they will engage in a two-day warm-up match on July 11 and 12. The specific venue for this warm-up game is yet to be determined. Notably, there will be no limited-overs fixtures during this tour, contrary to earlier reports.
In terms of recent encounters between the two sides, Pakistan and Sri Lanka clashed in a two-match Test series in Sri Lanka last year. The series ended in a 1-1 draw, with Pakistan achieving a remarkable victory in the first Test by successfully chasing a target of 342 at Galle. However, Sri Lanka responded strongly in the second Test, securing a commanding 246-run win.
The Pakistan Test squad for the upcoming tour includes Babar Azam as the captain, with Mohammad Rizwan serving as the vice-captain and wicketkeeper. The squad also features talented players such as Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Hasan Ali, among others. The support staff accompanying the team consists of notable names such as head coach Grant Bradburn, batting coach Andrew Puttick, and bowling coach Morne Morkel.
As the tour approaches, cricket fans eagerly anticipate the thrilling contests between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. With both teams aiming to assert their dominance in the World Test Championship, the series promises to showcase captivating cricketing action.
