Paul Stirling steps down from Ireland T20I captaincy
After the disappointing journey in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, Ireland legend Paul Stirling has stepped down from the T20I captaincy role.

After the disappointing journey in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, Ireland legend Paul Stirling has stepped down from the T20I captaincy role.
Ireland have underperformed in the last two T20 World Cups, where they managed to claim a total of only one win and two no results along with five defeats.
Ireland are now looking for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2028, which Australia and New Zealand will jointly host in late 2028. As the new cycle is set to begin in this format, Paul Stirling, who now holds the record for most T20I matches, has stepped down from the T20I captaincy role. However, he will continue his T20I career.
Paul will also continue the ODI captaincy role, while the country is eyeing the 14-team ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027, which South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will host next year. Meanwhile, Andrew Balbirnie is continuing the Test captaincy role.
Who can be the next Ireland T20I captain?
Paul replaced Andy Balbirnie for the T20I captaincy role in 2023. While Paul led Ireland a total of 48 T20Is, counting back from 2019, his team won 20 matches.
While the skipper Paul was injured during the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2026, Lorcan Tucker took the leadership charge for the team in the remaining one match of the tournament, where they thrashed Oman by 96 runs. He is the most consistent performer with the bat for his nation.
Meanwhile, the 33-year-old George Dockrell has a huge amount of experience, as the all-rounder can also be a strong leadership choice for the team.
India will tour Ireland for first time after 2023
On the other hand, Cricket Ireland has also confirmed that India will tour Ireland this June. Before India tour England for the white-ball series in July, the Men in Blue will tour Ireland for a short T20I series. India previously toured Ireland in 2018, 2022, and 2023, where they recorded six wins and one no result. However, two of those matches were very close, as the Men in Blue won those fixtures by four runs and two runs.
Cricket Ireland is likely to announce the 2026 home summer schedule in the next few weeks, where we will learn the details of the home T20I series against India.
