PCB eyes former captain as new head coach after poor T20 WC 2026 campaign

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is all set to make some major changes in its national teams. As a part of the development, the board can appoint former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed as the head coach of their Test team.

For the last 5 months, the Test team of Pakistanhas remained without a permanent head coach. During their previous assignment in the Whites with South Africa, Azhar Mahmood had served as the interim head coach; the series ended in a draw. 

As per the latest media reports, Sarfaraz Ahmed, who is currently in the UAE for a T20 and one-day series between Pakistan Shaheens and England Lions, made his case strong through the U-19 Asia Cup. Under the mentorship of the former cricketer, the Pakistan U19 was crowned ACC Men's U19 Asia Cup 2025 Champions.

It was previously reported that during the U-19 Asia Cup, some fans approached the PCB chair, Mohsin Naqvi, to appoint Sarfaraz Ahmed as the senior cricket team’s head coach.

When will Sarfaraz Ahmed start his tenure as the head coach of Pakistan's Test team?

With one win and a defeat, Pakistan are currently fifth in the ongoing cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC). For their next ICC WTC fixture, Pakistan is scheduled to play a two-match Test series against the Bangladesh national cricket team in May. In the tour, the first Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh will begin on May 8, and the second match is scheduled to be held from May 16.

If things go according to plan, then the former captain can make his debut as a Test format coach through the Bangladesh vs Pakistan series. Though there is currently no official confirmation regarding the development. According to media reports,  an official announcement regarding his appointment will be made soon.
