Pragyan Ojha to take charge as India's interim chief selector after Ajit Agarkar's exit

The current chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, is going to leave his post on October 04 when his contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ends. There was a meeting of the committee in Guwahati ahead of the second ODI of the three-match series between India and West Indies, as Pragyan Ojha has been named as the interim coach.  

In the opening ODI of the series at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, the home side earned a massive eight-wicket victory as they completed the chase of 296 runs, thanks to the twin centuries from captain Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, who remained unbeaten on 139 runs off 88 balls.

Pragyan Ojha named interim head of India's selection committee

There was no immediate information about the selection meeting. But it has been stated that Ojha, who is the senior-most among the existing four selectors in terms of the Tests being played, will take charge. In that same way, Parthiv Patel’s name came out for the chief selector’s role.

Ojha has played 24 Tests for the Indian side, where he has picked up 113 wickets at an average of 30.26 and a strike rate of 67.50 with seven five-wicket hauls at the best bowling figures of 6/47 in an innings. Meanwhile, Parthiv has taken part in one more Test than Ojha.

The new selectors are likely to make some key changes to India’s squads for the New Zealand series, where they will take part in ODIs, T20Is, and Tests. However, the board is anticipated to name a full-time chief selector soon, after the end of the Test series against the Blackcaps.

How has Pragyan Ojha performed for India as the selector

Ojha was appointed as one of the BCCI selectors back in September 202back in September 2025 last year in the Agarkar-led selection committee. He, along with RP Singh, was responsible for the inclusion of Sanju Samson in the Indian squad in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which they went on to win.

Ojha also played a major role when tension was raised between Virat Kohli and the head coach Gautam Gambhir-led team management regarding the participation of the former star in domestic cricket.

With his experience within the selection committee, Ojha will now need to play a massive and vital role in guiding the blue brigade through the upcoming assignments until the board appoints a permanent chief selector.
