In a big domestic transfer, former India opener Prithvi Shaw has officially switched to the Maharashtra cricket team for the next 2025-26 season. The Maharashtra Cricket Association made the confirmation on July 7, with the association revealing that Shaw had received a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Cricket Association last month.

Shaw, aged 25, broke an old relationship with Mumbai after he was withdrawn from their Ranji Trophy team last season for disciplinary issues. Though he played in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final in December 2024 to lead Mumbai to a title win he has since stayed out of domestic limelight. The move to Maharashtra marks a new beginning for the gifted right-hand opening batsman, who was touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket after his debut Test century in 2018.

In a letter to the MCA, Shaw thanked the association for their support through the years. "At this juncture in my career, I feel that becoming part of the Maharashtra team will make me a better cricketer still. I'm deeply thankful to the Mumbai Cricket Association for the chance and the support I have had," Shaw stated.

He said joining a forward-thinking team with the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ankit Bawne, Rahul Tripathi, Rajneesh Gurbani, and Mukesh Choudhary would have a good influence on his cricketing career. Shaw's transfer comes when he is seeking to rekindle his career following a series of setbacks ranging from injuries, fitness issues, and a slump in form. Interestingly enough, he remained unsold during the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Maharashtra Cricket Association president Rohit Pawar also expressed a warm welcome to the addition, saying, "We are excited to have a player of the caliber of Prithvi Shaw. His experience in international and IPL cricket will be very useful for our team, especially in guiding young players."

As Shaw starts anew, Mumbai and Maharashtra fans alike will be looking closely to determine whether the talented opener can revive the magic that once saw him rocket to national fame.
