PSL pink ball controversy: Marnus Labuschagne breaks silence after incident in LHQ vs HYDK Match 1 of PSL 2026
Marnus Labuschagne raised concerns in PSL 2026 after noticing the white ball turning pink-red as early as the second over.

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 started on Thursday, March 26. The first match was between Lahore Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. But the game got attention for a strange reason. When Lahore Qalandars batted, led by Shaheen Shah Afridi, the cameras showed the ball changing colour from white to red. This happened because the colour from Hyderabad Kingsmen's jersey rubbed off on the ball.
This made the first game of PSL 2026 very unusual. The match turned into a “pink-ball” game, which surprised the fans. Australia’s all-rounder Marnus Labuschagne, playing for Hyderabad Kingsmen, complained to the umpire. He said the white ball was getting pink and then red because of his team’s jersey.
Fans also noticed this and made fun of Hyderabad Kingsmen on X (formerly Twitter). After the game, Marnus Labuschagne said he had never seen this happen before. He also said he hopes the problem will be fixed in the next games.

What happened in the PSL pink ball controversy
The incident happened during the first match between Lahore Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen at Gaddafi Stadium. The game turned unusual when the white ball started changing color. Players and officials were surprised. Reports said the color from Hyderabad Kingsmen’s jerseys rubbed onto the ball when it was polished, slowly turning it pink and then reddish.
In limited-overs cricket, fielders often rub the ball on their jerseys to keep it shiny. This time, the maroon dye from Hyderabad Kingsmen’s kit came off on the white ball.
As Lahore Qalandars batted, the change became more noticeable. The faint pink soon deepened, raising concerns about visibility under lights and fair play. The unusual situation quickly drew attention on the field. The incident was embarrassing for the PSL, with fans questioning how such kits were allowed in a professional tournament.

Marnus Labuschagne shares first reaction as team captain
Marnus Labuschagne, captain of Hyderabad Kingsmen this season, noticed the problem with the ball early and raised it with the umpires on the field. Speaking about the unusual situation, he said he had “never seen anything like this” in his career, showing how rare it was in professional cricket.
He added, "I did say to the umpires after the second over, 'What's going on? The ball is red.' It must be from the clothes or something like that. I haven't seen anything like this before. I've seen occasions where something on a bat comes onto the ball, or when it hits the pad and takes a bit of paint off. But I've never seen this happen with clothing. I'm sure they'll sort it out in the next few games."
The incident caused major embarrassment for the PSL. Fans also questioned how the teams could allow such poor-quality kits in a professional tournament.

Some fans said, "PSL mai kuch v ho sakta hai 😭😭😭😭 2 stadium se start hua hai tournament.. ab premium bowl v nhi hai 😜😅"
Another commented, "Instead of applauding PSL for inventing a colour-changing cricket ball, people are busy blaming the quality of the jersey."
