Sharma started slowly but soon attacked the bowlers. He hit Jacob Duffy for a couple of boundaries and then smashed Lockie Ferguson for a boundary and a six. Before this match, Sharma had only one half-century in the tournament, against the Zimbabwe national cricket team, and had started the tournament with three ducks.
